Thanks for stopping by. This site is a good place to slow down, sit down, and get down and chill for a bit while you learn about the incredibly powerful tool I have created. If pride were not the chief of the seven deadly sins I would be proud(prideful) of PIAD (Play In A Day).

So, I will just tell you that as PIAD created itself with each concept I was PLEASED and SURPRISED. SURPRISED? YES, SURPRISED. I WAS SURPRISED BECAUSE WITH EACH CREATIVE STEP I LOOKED OUT AND SAW THAT SOME BEAUTIFUL ADDITIONAL FACET TO THE METHOD WAS THERE on my mental horizon TO MAKE THE METHOD MORE POWERFUL AND BENEFICIAL.

I will be continually adding to this post (and other posts) primarily to tell you about me and how kukulele:PLAY IN A DAY came to be. And those two elements or notes are sometimes as inseparable as two notes and an interval.

If you want to follow other posts as they look into the features of the system that are more obviously popular then do not wade into this yet. I may be here a while.

I walk at least a mile a day and walk at least one five mile hike or more each week. I also put in 30 or 40 miles a week on my bicycle where I do most of my meditation. As I move about whatever area I am in I exercise. If I am at the sink in the kitchen I hold the sink front with both paws and do a quick 25 squats. If I am watching something I am not working at like a movie I will stretch the big rubber bungies as i sit. But the legs do not escape. Half the time one end of the band is around one of my feet. I have two twenty pound dumb bells. Several times a day I will left them and do 20 curls.

Watching anything on a monitor, a TV screen, means physical exercise. Unless it is a movie or concert. Then I, kukulele, play along on my baritone ukulele. OK, the movie is an unknown bet because you probably don’t know what kind of sound track you will get. Consider a known movie musician or muscial director when you pick a flick see if you can pick along. You will find that this is much easier when you are playing the PIAD method. Annnnnnd your ability to play anything anytime ad hoc is improved immensely when you make playing to sound tracks a habit. So, i do this regularly. Because I have a need to be accomplishing something most of the time.

So yeah I apply myself to practicing and exercising a lot. I am probably the healthiest septuagenarian in town. That means of the people in town in their seventies I am probably the healthiest. I am seventy eight years of edge, or age. I spent fifty years engineering software and still do. I write five or six hours a day. I play or write or discuss music three to six hours a day and that is growing as people buy my method and realize they also bought the right to ask me questions and/or look into the PIAD owner music database.

With that tip I will close this part of the ongoing relationship between Can Do Jack and his product PLAY IN A DAY.

Let me, please, just add another sentence or two why I tell you how active I am. In our culture govcorp inculcates generation gaps. OK, in my case three or more generations between you and me may exist. IN YEARS. Some of us old people are not only seventy something years of age. Some of us are simultaneousl 15; and 30; and 60; and then some us are in our eighties already.

Trust me! I am the septuagenarian you need. Come on along with me on future tips from the hip.

PIAD is a system for playing guitar and ukelele. PIAD means Play In A Day. And it is true. You can learn to play in a day. The purpose of this site is to tell you everything about PIAD. PIAD fits into standard music theory. It does not violate any basic rules of music. Rather it exploits basic rules of music to enable a musician to more easily finger the fretboard:

  • to reach normal results in playing chords; that is to say, the pressing of string positions determined by fret locations to effectively fix the lengths of strings to produce selected note sounds. Fixing a precise momentary note on each of the strings (4 on the ukelele and 6 on the guitar) establishes and accomplishes with the combination of the notes the sounding of a particular chord(s)
  • to enable a sequence of chords to be played more rapidly and precisely than can be accomplished by previously established, standard, finger positions
  • to enable the more rapid playing of chords as though they are notes; that is to say a rapid chording of melody

cucurrucucu paloma

cucurrukukulele is the name of this post. No kidding. It is about a lot of things

but all those things it is about focus on your finding your groove; your finding

your way into thinking about kukulele. And that will be kukulele.
Two ‘k’s, two
‘u’s, two ‘l’s, two ‘e’s.

This post is an effort to explicate the development process in reaching for a

demonstration in thinking that would be with me now and to the end of my ability to

think whether that end be death or dementia.

This is a long post and this post is likely to be a concatenation of a number of

posts that will likely comprise a book on the subject. At this moment I really do

not know because I do not think in a way that enables me to know now what WILL BE.

I do not know how you have been inculcated. That is I do not know how you

think.That is, I don’t know what you have developed from all you have been taught

from birth up. I do not know how YOU think. But, if you are really thinking about

an instrument then whether this is the first post you read here or the last I think

this post will be the one that helps you most to know you want to play an

instrument and then whether the ukulele is the instrument for you NOW or you just

want to peer into the kind of thinking that created the kukulele method.

If you keep reading, if you get nothing else from this post, I think you will enjoy

my story and I think this post will give you something to think about. So bear with

me. Invest fifteen minutes.

When I was a boy I sang constantly. My older brother and I shared a love for

singing. We grew up in Memphis which was called The Home of the Blues. We heard

Hillbilly which early on was a simple version of Swing. Hillbilly became country

Swing but then pretty soon who cared cuz we were in the rock and roll era. Rhythm

and Blues was stealing Jazz’s thunder. PoP was becoming less like its name and more

like a steady kind of music, dependable, something you could fall back on.

My brother and I were into the crooners. Our favorite was Perry Como. Even after

Elvis made Memphis famous or vice versa and rock and roll made Elvis famous or vice

versa, we sang Perry Como. OK we crooned and rocked with Elvis too. And maybe more

so after Elvis bought his mom a house which I could almost see from my school. But

frankly I am glad it was Perry Como and not Elvis Presley who recorded cucurrucucu.

In fact I think it was probably Perry Como who first recorded Cucurrucucu Paloma in

English. I loved the idea of a song sung by mourning doves. I still love birds. I

still love that song. How was I to know that 20 years later I would hear that song

again but, in Spain in its original Spanish language, and sung by the top crooner

in Spain, Julio Iglesias, whose dozens of albums were topped only in world sales by

Michael Jackson. And much later I heard Spain’s Silvia Perez Cruz’s version of

Cucurrucucu I think that song was what took her to multiple national and

international awards. BTW, I, for the most part learned Spanish from the album

notes on Julio Iglesias 33 and a third album covers.

When I started playing the ukulele I was also developing the kukulele method. Three

subjects started playing around in my head.

One was the realization of an error. I had already created a web site called PLAY

IN A DAY GUITAR UKELELE. Observe that I spelled ukulele incorrectly. But the web

site was alread registered and I couldn’t change it. As I thought about correcting

the spelling anyd creating another site I fussed about the error and cussed about

my failure and wasted effort I slipped into an old pattern of thinking not unknown

to many who came before me. How could I redeem this error by using as a stepping

stone to something better? Having finished fussing and cussing I shoved the matter

into my brain’s background oven to bake a bit, or an hour, or a while. When the

background oven finished I would hear a ding. I was then thinking about the crazy

way I approached creativity.

Two, I was thinking about cucurrucucu paloma. The palomas or mourning doves are

crazy for spending hours ‘mourning’ their sad song. They must be cucu and I

actually wrote ‘cucu’ and then wrote the english word properly. Cuckoo. Crazy. I

was singing the song and scribbling (you can learn a lot scribbling) cucu and

cuckoo. And I stopped. I had scribbled ‘kuku’. DING! Somehow I thought the word

looked and sounded better as ‘kuku’. I continued thinking as i started playing

around with the cucu song as it became more and more kuku.

Three, I heard a distinct insistent DING!!!!!! I continued playing getting warmed

up now on the uku. I was interrupted by DING DING DING DING DING. I stopped playing

and scribbled ‘kukulele’. That says it all, I thought.

kukulele is for EVERYONE

kukulele IS FOR EVERYONE. It is a superlative course that will make you a good musician, a good guitar and ukulele player FAST. Then it will tease you and guide you in a life long pursuit of of the understanding of music.

For whom? For youm, that’s whom, You Who!. For those who want to learn everything about music, but today THEY WANT TO PLAY GUITAR AND/OR UKULELE. When I came up with PLAY IN A DAY, I had two problems with playing. (and I had been playing more than thirty years and more than thirty instruments) One, I had small hands. Two, I had slow hands. Result: concentration is on moving and placing the hand quickly and accurately. I’d rather be concentrating on the song in my head and the instant creativity as musical life pours through my hands, onto the keyboard and into the air.

Actually, as I thought about Play In A Day, I thought about the great guitar performers who had disabilities. Far worse than mine. Yet they became great and famous. Here are two: LES PAUL, DJANGO REINHARDT. Elsewhere on this page I write about them.

What I found as Play In A Day came into being was that it fit everyone who wanted to play an instrument. Especially those with little time or slow and imprecise facility for hand finesse.

It works for me. It works for young people with fast, fine finger and hand control. It works for normal and special kinds of music delivery.

It works in story telling and poetry. It works in concerts. It works with lyrical association. It works for solo instrumental delivery.

It works for old people like me. I teach the elderly. Some have never played any instruments. In clubs, in the parlor, in parties, in weddings, in group living like elder care. And, yes, little dude, in ‘rock’ bands.

HOW I CREATED THIS METHOD

 

I have been singing as long as I remember. My voice

was my most important instrument. It still is

although I now have 31 instruments and play them

all. Not all well. But, I play them all. When I

fell in love with the sound of the dulcimer, I made

one.

I learned to play guitar to accompany my friend,

Bob, an excellent guitar player. He couldn’t sing.

I couldn’t play guitar. But, I made him sound good

voice wise. He made me sound good, guitar wise.

But I knew I would never be a great guitar player.

My fingers are not long enough nor quick enough.

When I was courting my first wife a party guest

took a shine to her. His approach to winning her

favor was to knock me through a glass shower door

and try to take my heart out with a claw hammer.

I was sitting in the tub with a huge sheet of glass hanging over my neck and

another piece had cut my left wrist half off. They

put my wrist back together but the nerves in the

two smaller fingers have never fully recovered. For a long time melodies were difficultand slow to play and some chords were impossible.

In addition I fell while skiing and flipped the

pole strap around my right thumb reversing it and then I

fell on it at about thirty five miles per hour. My

right thumb is ghastly looking.

So, little fingers, nerve damage, broken thumb. I

should probably forget about playing stringed instruments and just stick to my horns, especially the saxophone.

Later on I read about great guitar players with

handicaps. Les Paul, Django Reinhardt to name a

couple. I hate to be outdone without a good reason.

So on a whim more or less I started playing ukulele.

I still wanted to play guitar. Primarily (Bob long gone)

to accompany my singing voice.

I am also a good poet and a good song writer. So I

wanted my voice, my lyrics, my guitar and ukulele

to all work together. And as i started discovering my method it all opened up to me.

My guitar work needed better expression, quicker

response, and variability.

I set about creating a way to give maximum

expression to a minimum of complex, distracting

finger positioning for chords and melodies.

I eventually discovered it. I felt stupid taking so

long getting to it.

But I did. I did it. And I have to say it is

beautiful.

It works.

It works so well I want to share it with everyone.

But, I cannot. Because, some people are going to

feel good about clinging to the established ways of

playing. They can be even inimical to someone who

makes something easy that they made hard.

Especially if they make money from people they are

teaching to play the hard way, the traditional way.

And that is OK. I know as well that people who have

time invested in a skill are not going to

appreciate someone who comes along and demonstrates

the skill can be learned in a tiny fraction of the

time that they have patiently, exhaustively,

invested in learning to play.

And why should they? They know now how to do it

their way, the way they were taught. Here’s why. I

know both ways. When I want to and need to play a

chord in the old way I can. But someone who knows

only the old way cannot play the new way because

they do not know the new way, the PIAD way.

But, I know, I have seen, that many of these who

know how to play the established way will reject my

method: either because of show or money.

Especially people who teach others to play the way

that they themselves play.

It involves money. If you look at the net, you will

see it is littered with guitar courses. guitar

courses that will teach you the intricate fingering

of every chord in the universe. NO MATTER HOW LONG

IT TAKES. And how long it takes isssssss a matter

of money to them.

If you have a guitar teacher and you visit that

guitar teacher every week for a lesson, the guitar

teacher will charge you, say, $40 per lesson.

If that guitar teacher can count on you for $40 a

week, then why would that guitar teacher want to

teach you to play in ONE DAY?

If you look on the internet you can get free guitar

lessons. The online guitar teacher will take you

patiently over the same page of text or the same

video or the same diagrams over and over and over.

For free? No, trust me. Money is going to come into

the picture somewhere. Look for it. OK, if not

money to the teach for time taught then why would

that guitar teacher do that? Wow, you ask good

questions. Here is the answer. The guitar teacher

would do that because next to each video screen,

each diagram, each page of text is an

ADVERTISEMENT. Annoying, equanimity destroying

advertising. Every time a weary guitar student

gets tired and takes a break from the guitar lesson

to click on an advertisement, what happens? The

guitar teacher makes money, MONEY MONEY MONEY.

I am likely to do the same thing. Kinda. You may

see an ad next to this text you are reading now. Of

course, you could be listening to the recording of

this web page whose link I put at the top so you

could listen to me tell you all this as you drive

to work, or walk the dog, or hike Mt. Witney.

Here is the thing. I may have a thousand blog posts

on this blog. We may discuss a thousand things

about musicianship, the science of music, famous

guitar players, the structure of music, how chords

are constructed, how melodies differ. We may talk

about a thousand things but we will not talk about

the design nor details of my PLAY IN A DAY GUITAR

COURSE.

Here’s why. I don’t believe much. What I do believe

is what I can demonstrate. I can demonstrate to you

how you can play guitar or ukulele in a day.

I believe that someone who works hard, invests

analysis and testing time and discovers how to do a

new thing deserves to profit from that thing.

Therefore I believe that if I give you my

guitar/ukulele course that teaches you how to play

in a day and improve every day forever, that you

should give me money.

Separate from all the things about guitar/ukulele

playing and music that we will discuss on this site

is the material that I will share with you about

how to extend the basic knowledge in Play In A Day

so that you continue improving, learning, and

understanding why and how the method works and a

lot of things that the “experts” would never tell

you because they are lost in thoughts about their

own method and what I share with you might never

occur to them.

And after you start Play In A Day, you will have

questions. And I will always be available to answer

questions you have about things that pop into your

head about the course and guitar playing and music

and I will answer.

I will also be sending you newsletters periodically

that explain things that I discover that I never

thought of before related to elements of the PLAY

IN A DAY method.

Also, the method has a second part that I

discovered after I discovered the method. And after

a time, I will share that part of the method. In

fact, I will share that second part of the course

with you freely IF. IF you did not give away the

first part to someone else in the mean time.

Now, that does not mean that you cannot play

guitar/ukulele by having the first part only. No,

you will be able to, as I say, PLAY IN A DAY and

continue playing better and better every day.

Eventually the day will come when you are ready for

the second part of the course and then I will share

it with you. It will not be difficult but, it will

improve the scope of your playing tremendously.
